FAA Vocal Arts Strand Audition Requirements

for the 24-25 school year

Please note that singers in the Lamar choir will be placed in ensembles based on their ability level not grade level and that placement is at the director’s discretion.


Audition Components:

  1. Short warm-up on Vee-Voh-Vee-Voh-Vee

  2. Pitch-Matching Exercise

    • The director will play two notes on the piano (one after the other) and students will sing back the two notes on “loo-loo.”

  3. YOUR CHOICE OF:

    An accompanied version of the first verse of America (My Country Tis of Thee) OR- “Scarborough Fair”

    • Must be memorized

    • Will be sung with the accompaniment track

    • Song Selections can be found at this link——> Accompanied Choices

      • There are practice tracks in various keys. Please practice all of them and decide which one suits your voice the best. When you arrive for your audition, the director will ask you which practice track you would like them to play.

        -OR-

        A Cappella (unaccompanied) Kodaly Song

    • Must be memorized

    • Ms. Kennell will give the starting pitch as written in the sheet music

  4. Sight-Reading (IF you wish to audition for a more advanced choir)

    • 8 measures in length

    • Written in the keys of C and F Major (you choose which key you would like to sing)

    • All step-wise motion (no skips)

    • Rhythmic breakdown:

      • Whole notes/rests

      • Half notes/rests

      • Quarter notes/rests

*Please note: A student can sight read using any method they choose. However, for Scottie Singers, solfege is required.

This is the sight-reading book uses solfege and a great resource for those are new to the solfege method or need more practice sightreading. The difficulty of the excerpt that will be used in the FAA auditions is equivalent to Unit 2 in this book
